Facilitating capacity-building with technical assistance and technology transfer for managing mercury in the Caribbean Region

There is a great need and interest by multiple countries and government ministries in the Region to establish a regional laboratory hub to assist in the assessment of mercury in the environment and the food that people depend on, and to guide policies to address mercury risks. This project will respond to this by organizing workshops to consolidate expertise and providing a forum for communication, networking and collaboration of relevant stakeholders including technical personnel (laboratory and field) and policy makers (ministries related to environmental monitoring, international trade, commerce, and human health). The project will facilitate equipping a laboratory and conducting relevant regional training. Furthermore, standardized biotic sampling that will help with national and regional mercury monitoring will be established.
